Sean Avery is a Douchebag - Take Two

Marty Brodeur probably should have taken the high road and shaken Sean Avery's hand after the final game of the Rangers-Devils series but I'm not going to get worked up about it like I'm sure some people will. It's about time that Avery learns that respect is not something you automatically get just for winning more games than the other guy. And you know what? I didn't see Avery offering his hand to Marty either. That looked like a pretty mutual cold shoulder to me.

No matter how you feel though, this quote is ridiculous: "Everyone talks about how unclassy I am, Fatso there just forgot to shake my hand, I guess." You cannot complain about other people being classless while calling them fatso. My emotionally disturbed middle schoolers have moved past calling people fatso. You're not the sympathetic hero in this story and you're certainly not the good guy, you dumb douchebag.

In twenty years, Fatso is going to be sitting at home with his wife and kids, surrounded by a few Vezinas, at least three Stanley Cup rings and a Hall of Fame plaque while his number hangs in the rafters of the building of the franchise that he helped make great. You'll be remembered as a guy who was hated by his teammates and got busted paying for sex. If you're remembered at all.

This seems like a pretty good demonstration of why the Rangers have basically had a muzzle on him for most of the season. I love that he thinks he's classy while calling someone else Fatso. Awesome.

At least he keeps it entertaining!

What's shocking to me is that he's not remembered now as being a racist. He sure dodged that label quickly for someone who showed no remorse then or now. That kind of thing tends to stick with a player for a long time, but I guess he's immune.

Anne M, I haven't paid a ton of attention to the Avery situation this season, but I'm fairly certain his silence in the media was actually his and his agent's choice, not a team-drive muzzling. He's a UFA this summer and he (and his agent) clearly realized his value would be higher if he stayed out of the papers. On the one hand, how astute of him! On the other, how ridiculous is it that he's not a mature enough adult to be able to handle speaking to the media (an essential part of a professional athlete's job duties)?

Seriously. Avery has the maturity of a 5-year-old.

I think "Sean Avery is a douchebag" might be the best tag in blogging history.

Pookie, I can't remember now where I saw it, but I did read something about the team having a role in his near complete media silence. My impression was that they pretty much don't let him get into situations where he runs his mouth, but it seems equally likely his agent was behind it and the team was also in favor.

Nope. It was definitely the team that put the muzzle on. I'd say that they should make him wear a ball gag but he'd probably like that.

Fatso? (hmm Avery is 5'10 and 195 lbs, Marty is 6'2, 215- I don't think that makes him a FATSO, unless of course you're comparing him to Milller. BUt compared to Millsy, anyone is fat LOL)

Are you kidding me? That is so 3rd grade!

Grow up asshole!

Argh. I am so done with him.

Pookie, I'll admit, I totally forgot about the racist remarks in his past. I wasn't really watching hockey at the time and I remember being really surprised when I finally read something about that because I'd NEVER heard it mentioned before.

Lee, I've gotten a lot of use of the "Sean Avery is a douchebag" tag considering it's only a week or so old.

And come on, Marty may be a little chunky but he's so much cuter than Avery that it's not even funny. For the record :-D

Amen to that!

When I heard this on Sportscenter this morning, I couldn't believe my ears. But I guess nothing should surprise me when the subject is A-hole Avery. Oh how I wish he would suddenly decide to become a monk and take a vow of silence, but I'm sure he would find new and exciting ways to be a douchebag even then.

How true! Marty is both cute and a champion...and Avery is what again?? Oh yeah, unattractive and a perennial dressing room cancer.

Is Broduer going to retort by making calling Avery short? Or being less famous than his ex-girlfriend?

I am backing off my previous "I think I'd like him as a Sabre" remark. I need to go back to what I thought of him last season in the playoffs, a twerp. And against Buffalo last year in the playoffs, he and I had the same number of goals.

Fatso. Ha. I do give Avery credit, at least he didn't bring up Broduer's escapades with his sister-in-law.

I think you need to work fatso into one of your tags next.

He already did. There was an article on ESPN early in the series where Marty mentioned that Avery needs to work on his trash talk, since the divorce and such happened five years ago.
