A Little Levity

When I pulled up the Buffalo News website this morning, I was intrigued by Bucky Gleason's headline, Sabres have the chips to retool. That seemed somewhat promising since "retool" suggests that the team has some talent and just needs a little tweaking which is much better than the usual, "This team blows without Chris and Danny!" chatter. And then I got to this:

The Sabres would like to keep Campbell. He’s their best player.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHA!

:::deep breaths, wiping tears streaming from my eyes:::

I don't even know what to say other than that might be one of the most ridiculous things I've ever read in the paper. And I've read quite a few ridiculous things there. I can think of three guys off the top of my head who should be offended by that statement.

Oh, Bucky... I needed a good laugh this morning. Thanks, man.

Their best player? On what criteria was this statement based? Player with the reddest hair? Most All-Star appearances? Appearing in highest number of lame commercials? That awkward picture of Pommerdoodle in the Delacy Ford commerical is pretty lame.

He's not even their best defensemen let alone best player on the team! I can think of a few forwards, defensemen and a goaltender that might find issue with that statement.

Hee, Heather, this made me feel so much better. Laughing at Bucky really is a better approach than my usual one. :)

Gah! Is this what Sabres fans go through on a routine basis with this man? It makes me want to fire off a nasty e-mail re: the Stars players. I mean, could someone have actually like, CHECKED his column?

I also like the fact that he's upset that we didn't get anything in return for Drury and Briere. I guess that we should have traded them last year at the deadline and retooled then.

Just when I think Bucky can't get any stranger, there he goes and does it again.

Anne, as we all know, All-Star appearance mean everything :::eye-roll:::

Meg, sometimes you laugh to keep from crying. Plus this had to be a joke... Right?

Caitlin, let me make sure I'm understanding you... You're NOT interested in trading Campbell for Boucher and Niskanen? You're a little unclear :D

289, all the time's Bucky's gone on about not getting anything for them and I hadn't even thought of that. Man, this column just gets dumber and dumber.

Mags, yep. Yep.

If we can't at least pursue the possibility of getting Jochen Hecht to at the minimum up our team's hotness factor, then no, we're not interested, especially that red-headed monstrosity you've got playing defense.

Besides, isn't it kind of unspoken that we're looking for a Finn anyways? Four Finnish players just isn't enough. We need five!

I was already rolling my eyes when he dragged out Ted Nolan and Pat Lafontaine (talk about living in the past) so my head about exploded when I got to Campbell is their best player. If Campbell is their best player, well, I guess we know why they aren't in first place. Or even eighth place at this point.

I also like the snotty closing to this column "Every now and again, it works." Implication: "trades I like work, and the Sabres don't ever make good trades." I'm sure Regier read that this morning and called Bucky immediately to thank him for all those good ideas and to invite him to the next few personnel meetings.

Well you can't have Lydman. Who would join Stafford in death metal fandom then. He'd be so alone!

Caitlin, I'm far too attached to Jochen and Toni and they actually have some value to our team so it looks like the Dallas-Buffalo dealings are off. No need for the GMs to even bother.

It must be nice to be Bucky Gleason. The guy draws a paycheck from going to his computer, opening his column and printing it.

Bucky couldn't have written that with a straight face, right? Come on.

I sincerely hope that Bucky is not as stupid as he appears in his columns. How the Buff News has quality, thoughful guys like Harrington and Vogl, and then employ idiots like Gleason and Sullivan is beyond me.

But it was a good laugh!

Maybe I have a different definition of "retool". We rebounded from a devastating collapse in the playoffs and got rid of the tools (Drury and Briere).

Do you think if we start building up Bucky citing his "uncanny insights" "in depth analysis" "drawing readership from far and wide" we could trade HIM to the Globe & Mail for James Mirtle? Think they'd go for it?

I don't care if he IS your best player, you can't have Bouche and Niskanen. :D

Well, Jere Lehtinen's the only metal fan on our team (Dude is hardcore into Slayer!) and he does okay! (That being said, Lydman's all yours.)

I concur. Unless of course, you're interested in a balding, kind-hearted, sweet as pie Swedish defenseman? He may screen up Crunchy, but he's got a heart of gold! I swears it!
