I got nothing.
I've been sitting here staring at my screen and I can't come up with a single coherent thought - positive or negative - about this game or this team. I'm completely blank inside. I have thoughts on other things but when I try to zero in on hockey all I can remember is Harry Neale talking about Henrik Tallinder making a misplay when he wasn't even on the ice. There's nothing else. I think my mind is trying to protect me by blocking everything hockey related out.
However, I have nothing else to do right now - so I'm going to throw out some stuff that has absolutely nothing to do with hockey. Feel free to comment. Hey, it might be good for you to block it out too, you know.
- I'm about halfway through the second season of Battlestar Galactica and I really, really like it a lot. It's no Firefly but what is? I'm hoping to catch up with it completely before it starts back up with the new season. I totally hated Starbuck at first but she's kind of grown on me. I have a weird thing about Edward James Olmos - he creeps me out - so I wasn't sure how that was going to work out but he's good. I'm all about Tigh. That guy kills me even if he is a screw-up.
- When Lost is all said and done, all I really want is a happy ending for Desmond (my current wallpaper) and Penny. I hate Jack and Kate. Could not care less about them. I like Locke and Sawyer but they're probably both domed and I'm fine with that. But if Desmond and Penny don't reunite, get married, have lots of adorable babies and live happily ever after, I'm going to be disappointed. Disappointed enough that the whole show will be a let-down for me. I really think they've become the emotional underpinnings of the whole show. What do you think the chances of a happy ending actually are?
- I've long been opposed to a new Indiana Jones movie, not because Harrison Ford is old but because I think they were pretty lucky to get out with three decent to great movies (Raiders of the Lost Ark - great, Temple of Doom - decent, Last Crusade - good). I had no desire to see that ruined, particularly after hearing the first script wasn't up to George Lucas's standards. (Lucas is certainly a genius when it comes to certain things but screenwriting is not one of those things.) But I'm not gonna lie, the teaser trailer for the new movie gave me happy chills. Usually there's only one summer movie I really HAVE to see and everything else goes in the rental pile but this year there are a few big movies I want to see in addition to the new Indy, The Dark Knight and Iron Man being the other two must-sees. I'm so stoked about Robert Downey, Jr. in Iron Man.
- Since BSG has been sucking up most of my time, I haven't watched a lot of movies lately. I did see Across the Universe which I really expected to hate but I kind of liked it. Parts of it didn't work (skip the Being For the Benefit of Mr. Kite sequence) but parts of it were really sweet and touching, I thought. The lead guy's voice reminded me a little of Ewan McGregor in Moulin Rouge so that was a plus in his favor since I adore Ewan in MR.
- I want Jillian to win Project Runway, but I think it's going to be Christian. Which will annoy me to no end.
- I've been devouring U2 by U2 the last few days. I got this for Christmas last year - it's a coffee table book full of little tiny print interviews and tons of amazing photos - and while I loved what I read, at the time I was working two jobs and it was tough to carry around with me so I didn't get too far into it. I pulled it down off the bookshelf Friday night and have gotten totally lost in it. It's very cool because unlike most U2 things which focus on Bono and Edge, this includes exhaustive interviews with all four guys. I've always had a soft spot for Larry - so handsome! so stoic and private! so dryly funny! - so I'm loving getting into his head a little. (My favorite album is The Joshua Tree although I think their best album is Achtung Baby. My ten favorite U2 songs - off the top of my head, no thought at all which is the only way I can do this or I'll be here all night changing the list: I Will Follow, I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For, Bad, All I Want Is You, One, Until the End of the World, Acrobat, Wake Up Dead Man, Beautiful Day, City of Blinding Lights. Interesting. Maybe Achtung Baby is my favorite album. Okay, I'm changing the subject now because I'm already having second thoughts about that list and I could do this forever.) I've never seen a book with its own commercial. That's pretty cool.
- Some of my favorite non-hockey sports blogs/websites: Fire Joe Morgan, Where Have You Gone, Andy Van Slyke?, The Dugout, SportsJustice (for the Astros stuff - I skip the football and basketball talk), and The Hardball Times. Guess I should have just said "baseball" instead of "non-hockey."
- And now I leave with you my favorite recent YouTube video:
Worst blog entry ever? Maybe so. Better than that Sabres game? It might be.

I Hate The Sabres
Tonight I'm going to put the same amount of effort into my blog entry that the Sabres put into the Leafs game. Whoops, I think I've overdone it.
I can't even talk about this game right now but I will say this: At one point in the game I would've traded the entire team - including Hank and Lindy - for Mats Sundin. And you know what? Even John Ferguson, Jr. would've said, "I ain't that stupid."
The only good thing about this game was that Mats Sundin always makes me think of one of my all-time favorite commercials (second only to Greg Maddux and Tom Glavine in "Chicks Dig the Longball"), the French-Canadian Goalie Cab Driver.
Here, watch 'em. They're way more entertaining than anything you saw from the Sabres tonight, I promise.
Well, it's been fun. I think I'm going to start up an American Idol blog or something because hockey? Totally blows.

And Now For Something Completely Different...
After I posted this morning, I decided I wasn't going to think about the Sabres the rest of the day. They're bugging me and I don't like it. Instead I thought about the Bills. They're kind of a charming little team, aren't they? Isn't it nice to have a team that makes up for a lack of talent by working really, really hard every week? I like that. It's fun.
This has been posted on various Buffalo websites before, but I'm throwing it up here because whenever I need to lighten the mood, I cue this baby up:
Marshawn came through my line late one night at the grocery store and he was exactly like he is on TV - funny, friendly, and just a tad loopy. He is truly, to quote Robert Royal, "a fresh of breath air."
I've also been ogling this tackle by Paul Posluszny (the replay from behind him is the best angle, I think):
That is, fierce, y'all. I think that deserves a "Rrrrawwwr!" for sure.

Let's Pretend I Wrote Something Meaningful, Okay?
In honor of NaBloPoMO, I'll be attempting to post something every day in November. If you're not checking in every day, make sure you're catching all the posts!
Look, I'll be honest. This is a total throw-away post. I enjoyed the game tonight, I'm glad we won, but I'm exhausted. It's been a long, busy, weekend and I've been desperately fighting off a cold. In honor of Thomas Vanek playing yet another confident, controlled game, here's a gratuitous YouTube video of one of my favorite moments from him last season, also full of confidence and swagger. If you watch the replay, the puck was in and out of the net before Huet even moved. Awesome. It's nice to see you again, Thomas!

Hockey Game Tonight? What Hockey Game?
In honor of NaBloPoMO, I'll be attempting to post something every day in November. If you're not checking in every day, make sure you're catching all the posts! And now for something completely different...
Why I Love Hockey #32 - Gene Kelly
With respect to everyone else, there are two great dancers in movie history, Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly. The two of them are both amazingly talented and enjoyable to watch, but they have very different styles. Fred was very formal, almost always dancing in a top hat and tails. Very elegant, very graceful, a little stiff. Gene brought dancing to the common man. He danced in casual clothes and his movements were more powerful and athletic, his whole body chugging away. Because of the difference in styles, I think most people have a pretty strong preference for one or the other. While I like Fred (I particularly love Swing Time), I am a Gene Kelly girl through and through.
I know, I know... That's great, Heather. But what's it got to do with hockey? Hang on, I'm getting there.
A few months ago I read a book by Dave Bidini called The Tropic of Hockey: My Search for the Game in Unlikely Places. It was about Bidini's travels around the world where he found himself playing hockey in some very unusual places like China, Dubai, and Romania. It's a really sweet, fun book and I recommend it to the readers among you. I read it during the free agency frenzy and all the fall-out and it was the perfect antidote to all the crazies (players, GMs, media, and fans all included).
Anyway, in the book, Bidini makes a quick mention of Gene Kelly. Gene's father was Canadian and every winter he flooded their backyard in Pittsburgh and made a rink. Gene grew up playing hockey and even played in a semi-pro league for a time. Bidini said that Gene later credited hockey for some of his dance moves describing them as "wide open and close to the ground." I'd never made the connection before but as soon as I read that quote I got a mental image of Gene Kelly and Donald O'Connor in Singin' in the Rain doing a move where they stand in one spot, swing their arms front to back, and kind of run in place. I thought of it because it looks almost exactly like they're ice-skating. I don't know why, but I found this to be completely exciting and endearing. If there are two things I never expected to be connected it would be Gene Kelly and hockey. But there you go, the power of hockey. Who knew that years before I fell in love with hockey I was falling in love with something directly influenced by it?
Below is the Moses Supposes routine. You can see the steps I was thinking of at the -1:54 mark when Gene and Donald jump down off the desk and at the -:12 mark after they stop piling all the junk on top of the poor elocution tutor. The image up before the video starts is a good shot of it too now that I look at it. I would recommend just watching the whole song because it's so charming and joyful. If I had to watch one scene from one movie for the rest of my life, it would be this one. I've watched it five times while writing this and it almost made me forget about the very frustrating hockey game I watched tonight which I refuse to talk about at this time.
ETA: In retrospect, I should have included this number from It's Always Fair Weather because duh, he's on skates! Granted, they're roller skates and not ice skates but close enough. Gene's hockey background would explain why he looks so comfortable on the skates. It gets really good dancing-wise around the -2:00 mark. I wanna see an NHLer pull this off.
